Is Jesus Really God’s Son?

“Whoever speaks the truth gives honest evidence, but a false witness utters deceit.” (Proverbs 12:17 ESV) 

Jesus both claims and evidences that he is god.

Here are some helpful places to see the biblical evidence:

1. Baptism – Mark 1:9-11

  • Mark 1:9–11 “In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. [11] And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.’” (ESV)

2. I AM Statements – Mark 14:62, John 4:26, 8:58, 18:6, Exodus 3:14

  • Mark 14:62 “And Jesus said, ‘I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven’.” (ESV)

  • John 4:25–26 “The woman said to him, ‘I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.’ [26] Jesus said to her, ‘I who speak to you am he.’” (ESV)

  • John 8:58 “Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.’” (ESV)

  • John 18:6 “When Jesus said to them, ‘I am he,’ they drew back and fell to the ground.” (ESV)

  • Exodus 3:14 “God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ And he said, ‘Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’’” (ESV)

3. Immanuel – Matthew 1:23

  • Matthew 1:23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).” (ESV)

4. See God – Matthew 5:8

  • Matthew 5:8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (ESV)

  • John 1:18 “No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.” (ESV)

5. Seen Me, Seen Father – John 14:7

  • John 14:7 “If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” (ESV)

6. Image of the Invisible God – John 1, Colossians 1:15-16

  • John 1:9–10 “The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. [10] He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.” (ESV)

  • Colossians 1:15–17 “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. [16] For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. [17] And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (ESV)

7. Father and I Are One – John 10:30

  • John 10:30 “I and the Father are one.” (ESV)

8. Alpha and Omega, Beginning and the End – Revelation 1:8, 22:20

  • Revelation 1:8 “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’” (ESV)

  • Revelation 22:20 “He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” (ESV)

9. Making Self Equal with God – John 5:18

  • John 5:18 “This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.” (ESV)

10. Shares God’s Glory – John 17:5-6

  • John 17:5–6 “And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. [6] “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.” (ESV)

11. He Is the New Temple – John 2:18-19

  • John 2:18–19 “So the Jews said to him, ‘What sign do you show us for doing these things?’ [19] Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’” (ESV)

12. He Is the Law Giver – Matthew 5-7

  • Matthew 7:28–29 “And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, [29] for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.” (ESV)

13. Great High Priest – Hebrews 4:14

  • Hebrews 4:14–16 “Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. [15] For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. [16] Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (ESV)

Was Jesus More Than Just a Good Man?

“If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.” (1 Corinthians 15:19 ESV) 

1. Virgin Birth – Matthew 1:18, Luke 1:26-35

  • Matthew 1:18 “Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.” (ESV)

2. Fulfillment of Prophecies – Ps 22, Isaiah 53:1-12

  • Isaiah 53:5 “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.” (ESV)

3. Angels Worship Him – Hebrews 1:6

  • Hebrews 1:6 “And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, ‘Let all God’s angels worship him.’” (ESV)

4. Reception of Worship – John 9:38, 20:28

  • John 9:38 “He said, ‘Lord, I believe,’ and he worshiped him.” (ESV)

5. Transfiguration – Matthew 17:1-13

  • Matthew 17:5 “He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.’” (ESV)

6. Claim of Disciples – John 20:28-29 – Thomas

  • John 20:28 “Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’” (ESV)

7. Without Sin – Hebrews 4:15

  • Hebrews 4:15 “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.” (ESV)

8. Forgives Sin – Matthew 9:2-6

  • Matthew 9:2 “And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, ‘Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.’” (ESV)

9. Raises Others from the Dead – John 11:1-46

  • John 11:43 “When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out.’” (ESV)

10. Resurrection and Ascension – Mt 28:1-15, Acts 1:4-11, Luke 23 & 24

  • Matthew 28:6 “He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.” (ESV)

  • Acts 1:9 “And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.” (ESV)

“but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you;
